The lost art of Politeness!

Good afternoon from BeaverCleaverville!
So after running into quite a few shocked people on the other end of conversations either in person or on the tellie I figured I would address something that apparently is a lost art: Politeness (or at least my perception of what it use to be). My mother was raised partially down south but always in a southern minded household, so Sir and Ma'am was a way of life. Please and Thank you was never left behind or you were quickly forgotten when anything was coming your way. I distinctly remember my mother going to hand me a candy, toy, book, etc. and hanging on to it with her grip of death. I would stare at her as if she was a crazy woman until it finally clicked "thank you" I would mumble and finally she would release the pit bull lock on my item of desire and off I would scurry.
I tried to get items from my aunt and the same pit bull lock! I remember thinking "Are you kidding me?! this again!?" eventually pleases and thank yous became a way of life. Another one of my friends mothers taught me quickly the difference between "may I" and "can I". I remember saying "Can I please have a drink of..." and she would say "I don't know... Can you?" I would roll my eyes and say "FINE may I?" she would then say "of course dear help yourself"
What I thought to be some of the most obnoxious lessons of my life come back now to help me later in life. You know those phone calls to the doctors offices, health insurance,  or whoever else YOU hate calling? Come on, I know you are thinking of them all right now! The ones you hurry to get through so you can just get on with your day. My mother always said "You get more flies with honey than vinegar!" and I use to laugh and laugh because "Nobody got time for that!" am I right? But one day it honestly clicked for me. I picked up my phone calling my Doctors office *ring ring* "how can I help you" "Oh yes Ma'am I'm a patient of so and so and I'm hoping you could possibly help me with a little question if it wouldn't be to much trouble please".......
There is a long pause on the other end of the line "did you just call me ma'am?" I hear on the other end of the line. I chuckle "yes I did... my mother was raised in the south" I respond "well aren't you the sweetest....how can I help you!" I can hear her audibly smiling on the other end. Let me tell you a little Sir/ma'am please/thank you goes a long way in this day and age of hurry up I got places to be Jerk!!
It may seem old fashion but I miss the good old days when a little respect went a long way. Yes Sir or Ma'am give me the good old days Thank You Very Much!
Hope you have a Wonderful Day and Thank you for reading!

Vintage darling I missed you!!

Good afternoon from BeaverCleaverville!
Had to actually leave the house today. When you are on Coumadin you must get your blood checked regularly so off I popped to the lab, which means I must get dressed. Wow that was a process! I felt as if my body was stuck in wet cement but I did finally manage a simple skirt, sweater, and stylish hairdo! Unfortunately on Doxycycline you can NOT be in the sunlight for long (I call it the vampire drug) or else you will receive a nasty burn so I strolled out in a nice sweater to boot!
After the lab work I went to my local super for some groceries and a few other necessities before coming! I was absolutely shattered!! A quick Lyme update: due to the severity of my Herx reaction it was determined a change in meds was necessary, so I'll update you all on that as it happens.
While I was getting groceries I received such nice compliments once again on my vintage get up, made me feel good to be out and about even thought I was in pain. I have missed being dressed and done up!
I'm very excited about my current order on its way!! High waisted palazzo pants like the 40s!! If I have to be covered I'll darn well do it in style my dears!! I'll follow and take a page from the great Katharine Hepburn:
Hilariously enough her fashion was considered quite the scandal in her day. How dare a LADY wear MEN'S pants! But boy did she ever! Only hope mine look half as good on me!! I'll post photos as soon as they arrive!! Manage to snag them at a scream three pair for thirty dollars!!!!
Well dearies I'm off to attempt some housework before I'm completely done for the day!

Return to normal

Good morning from BeaverCleaverville!
Day four of treatment and I still can't talk. The MIC says this is the quietest he has ever heard me. I communicate with him on my iPad but last night we found humor that I was still able to interrupt him even when typing.
During treatment I'm going to have more bad days then good but que sera sera! I'm a warrior and I desperately want to get better! These symptoms will ass and eventually I'll be loosed for. This prison that is my Lyme disease! Due to the immense pain in my joints standing, getting dressed, and styling my hair haven't really been options and the MIC hasn't quite been trained in the art of thrower feet victory roll (bless his heart) lol so I figured I would show you a purchase from last week that never made it here!!
This vintage smoking box we got for a steal and now we store cigars and what not in. It was the last piece we needed for our beautiful 50s serving bar! We also managed to find the MIC this beautiful
pipe and tobacco holder!
One last comment:
One of the things that amazes me with this blog is seeing where my audience is actually from. I have members from the USA all the way to India and Serbia. That amazes me that my words make it that far! I would love if you all would take a moment and comment where you are from and say hi because it just floors me that my blog is making it all over the world!! Thank you thank you thank you for the support!!!

Life on pause

Good morning from BeaverCleaverville!
I discussed the other day how I have begun treatment for Lyme disease. A lot of people really feel that Lyme disease can easily be treated with "take this pill for a week" and you are fine, but nothing could be further from the truth. Depending on how long you have had Chronic Lyme disease determines how long you will have to be on meds and how severely you will react to the start of treatment.
It has been determined that I have most likely had mine Lyme since I was a kid so starting my treatment has been a painful experience or what is referred to as "herxing" (getting worse before you get better) when you start taking the meds you release all of the dying Lyme disease and toxins rapidly into your body and all of you symptoms come out raging at once. Sometimes it also starts to show what other coinfections you are, dealing with. I am currently dealing with bouts of extreme pain in my joints, headaches, tremors, muscle spasms, weakness, dizziness, inability to walk or speak at times...it's very confusing, I thank God every moment for the support of my amazing family and wonderful MIC, and new friends who are Lyme experts during this process or else I think I feel I would be losing my mind.
My blog will try to follow everything as I can but sometimes finding the right words is very difficult right now. Your good thoughts, your prayers, and good vibes are all greatly appreciated. I'm sending all my love to you all.

Health update and Lyme awareness

Good morning from BeaverCleaverville!
I would like to take a moment out of our regularly scheduled vintage programming to discuss something very important! It's an odd moment, when you are sitting inside a doctors office crying out of joy because she has just told you you have a disease. It's definitely not the standard reaction to be sure, but when you have spent the past year noticing your health rapidly declining with no answers and thinking you are losing your mind, relief comes with answers. After spending years feeling like a prisoner trapped inside my very own body someone offering you the keys out is a God send and it hits you like a ton of bricks.
After my daughter was born I could never stay well for longer than a few weeks, I constantly had low grade fevers, joint aches, infections, and I was in and out of the hospital with bizarre issues! I had fully expected another dead end appointment, another doctor who wouldn't listen, another brush off, another deaf ear, and another slamming door. I went in there ready to go twelve rounds with another doctor only tonbe greeted with "I believe you", and honestly I broke down. After dozens of tests, labs, and dead end doctors appointments I FINALLY have a diagnosis:
I have chronic Lyme disease!
Chronic Lyme disease is extremely difficult to diagnosis. It is a great mimic of many other diseases such as MS, meningitis, malaria, ect and often gets diagnosised as one of those.
Many people think of ticks as the large version on the left....but many people don't know about the deer tick on the right! It is the size of a poppy seed when fully engorged with blood from its host and the largest carrier of Lyme disease. So if you are outside for long check yourself, check your hair, check places carefully!! These little buggers hide easily!!!
The most complicated part is those with Lyme disease most often are infected with coinfections from the tick. (Other diseases coinfecting the body with the Lyme disease ie Babesia, bartenella)
http://lymedisease.org (one of the best web sites out there)
So educate, be aware, check yourself, check your kids, get tested!!!

Learning to trust....

Good afternoon from BeaverCleaverville!!
I am often asked when discussing our lifestyle "don't you worry about the finances, or the cars, or or or..." I have to admit the answer hasn't always come easily.
When we first made the change over I fully turned over the "manly duties" to the MIC and I refused to look back. I had to fully trust and for the first month it was horrible. I found myself in the mentality or my old life.....pacing, fretting over things that were no longer under my jurisdiction.
Finally one night I had a long time to sit and think. As the survivor of an extremely abusive relationship trust has never come easy, but I wasn't trusting with just my life. It was the lives of my children as well. After some time I had to remind myself that my MIC had never once yelled, sworn at, or even come close to hurting me in anyway, on the contrary he spent his days building me up! He would tell me "not to worry I've got this" and after giving myself a good talking to I decided to "let go and let God"
I knew the MIC had it and I fully trusted him with me and my children's well being. It's an odd feeling, but once you fully do it it's truly rewarding (in my opinion)! Learning to trust again hasn't been an easy road...but I'm so glad my MIC is walking it with me!

MIC's Lunch

Good afternoon from BeaverCleaverville!!
I apologize for no post yesterday but it's been such a hectic weekend. We had a few amazing hauls at the antique stores that I will post slowly over the coming week but I wanted to show this one off today:
This gorgeous lunch box that I found for the MIC! He had been hunting for one for so long for his new job!!! I finally located one hidden away in the back corners of one of my favorite antique stores! Luckily he had the matching thermos to go with it!!!
So today I packed up a nice lunch for the MIC and delivered it myself to his office!
Inside the lunch box there is a metal wire on top that actually holds the thermos to the top of the lunch box!! I thought that was quite wonderful. I had to give them both a good cleaning, but they are both in lovely working order so I was gobsmacked! The MIC was also thrilled to have his "Archie Bunker" lunch box, as he has been referring to it! Hope this brought back some good memories to any of you that have ever used one of these!

Good old fashion cookout

Good evening from BeaverCleaverville!
I apologize for such a late post but today has been rather hectic. The MIC and I slept in late and ate some breakfast out. Then we shuffled out to the antique store with the baby where we picked up two gorgeous hats that I will posted about tomorrow!! While there an older woman stopped me asking if I worked at the local historical museum. I giggled and responded "no I dress like this every day" she smiled...paused and said "no really you can dress like this every day!" I polietley responded "promise I really do" and even the shop owner who has seen me tons agreed. She smiled complimented my dress and moved on.
Our little troop then went to a good old fashion family cook out. We had hot dogs and hamburgers (my roll was gluten free) and enjoyed the company while sitting outside. It was the good old fashion fu. That I think a lot of the world is letting slip by. We took the pontoon boat slowly around the lake continuing our chats and then even continued them over homemade desserts. I enjoyed watching my children play with their grandfather before the MIC and I had to run off to play rehearsal. The entire day reminded me of a lazy 50s weekend.
Such a beautiful day for it as well sunny and mild!!
I hope your weekends were as stress free and wonderful!!!

Pictures in a locket

Good afternoon from BeaverCleaverville!
Yesterday I picked up an incredible haul from my church yard sale! I plan on posting the entire thing but one piece in particular struck me. It was a small locket.
I happen to know who the owner was and I know she was quite a classy lady. Inside was the amazing part:
Inside she had carefully cut out a photo of herself and her husband. I couldn't help but smile at her gorgeous hair style and his awesome uniform, but then I looked closer. I looked at how proudly he was smiling at who was taking the photo and I imagined that she was standing behind the camera. I thought if only these pictures could talk the stories they could tell. I had originally bought this locket with the intention of putting new photos in it, but I think I quite like the ones that are there now.....they remind me of a better time. When life was as simple as "say cheese" and true love was forever! These photos give me hope that one day someone can capture an imagine of me looking so happy. Today I proudly wear this necklace and remember the little things.

The final step towards vintage

Good afternoon from BeaverCleaverville!
Today is a very oddly momentous occasion! I finally removed the last of my extraneous piercings. I once boasted that I had 11 piercings!! My son Zachary learned to count by those piercings, which I'm not sure is a good or a bad thing lol!  So today I stared in the mirror and asked why I was holding onto them? I didn't really like them anymore and hey didn't blend with my vintage fashion.
I reached up and remove my industrial, and the rest, and was quite pleased with the outcome! I am left with the standard piercings and my nose stud (my nose stud is very tiny and has a deep sentimental value to me so I keep it). The MIC hasn't seen yet but I'm hoping he quite likes it!
I thought I'd be sadder to see them go but I am actually happy and excited, it completes my look.
I know what you re thinking "but what about your tattoos?" All of my tattoos are memorial pieces and are very precious to me. They will never go away but I'm very ok with that and if I must a cardigan does the trick!
Hope you like the new look:

To the mother at market basket

Well this afternoon in BeaverCleaverVille my world was a little rocked! I went to do my grocery shopping and I wasn't even dressed up to the nines!! (as I've posted I've recently begun waist training and today's temperatures I opted for comfort over fashion lol) while I still stood out I guess I often forget how much! I was about to check out when I heard a little girl scream "Mommy she has red lipstick Mommy she has red lipstick look mommy!" I turned to see a fourish girl jumping wildly pointing at me. I smiled kindly at her and went to speak when the mother looked at me horrified and yanked her back. She gave me a look like I was the devil herself and told the girl "we don't speak to weird people". I stood there mouth agape for a moment... "weird people" me?! My eyes roamed the aisles staring at the green haired teens, tattoo ladened "gentlemen", and heavily pierced teens and thought "seriously? I'm the weird one?!"
now children's reactions to my clothes are among my favorites! They often think I'm famous or a "princess" as I've been called twice now (I didn't go out of my way to correct her I merely smiled and waved kindly) but this mothers reaction broke my heart. What was she teaching this girl? That because I was wearing a nice skirt and red lipstick I was weird so don't ever speak to me?! How did she know me?! Now I'll admit I'm a little odd....but not in any way you need to guard your children from!!! In fact I have two children of myown Andy was a nanny for many years!! I left the store with a lot to think about. What is this generation teaching our kids? That you can be different as long as you don't stand out? That those who are are to be astracisized? I never got to answer that excited girls questions about my lipstick...and I never will, but to the mother at market basket:
Im a 28 year old mother of two!
I work hard to make my house a home and I am sure you do too!
If you had let me answer your little girl I would have simply state that "I wear it because it's pretty" and that's all. Not some crazywhacked out political right wing agenda answer that would have forever scarred your child.i hope the next time you see "a weird person" you take a moment to teach your daughter that they aren't so different, or else this world is going to grow up hating one another!

Mad men myths or fact?

Good afternoon from BeaverCleaverville!
I recently have begun watching Mad Men, and while I adoooore the show I found myself horrified by some of the things I saw!! Everyone smoking and drinking everywhere, women constantly dressed to the nines, women who's biggest concern in life was getting married, taboo talk of psych visits, and the list goes on and on. I took my list to my mother (who lived during the period) and asked her to confirm or debunk the images I saw on the show:
1) people smoked everywhere!
CONFIRMED
My mother stated that not only did people smoke in restaurants, bars, offices, and HOSPITALS, but she has vivid memories of people walking into their home and lighting up their cigarettes in front of the children.

2) women smoke and drank while pregnant

CONFIRMED
While watching the show the above character both smoke and drank while pregnant, I thought "no!!!" But my mother confirmed that yes this was typical! Of course this was based under the best knowledge of the day where even "doctors smoked lucky strikes"

3) all women went around dressed to the nines (even cleaning the house)

DEBUNKED
My mother stated "unless you were June Cleaver" pants were very common especially while cleaning the house!

4)women only worked to find a husband

NEITHER CONFIRMED OR DENIED
while my mother quickly stated that was in fact NOT true, knowing the mindset of the day I have a feeling it depended on your raising!

And finally number five
5) going to the psychiatrist was hush hush!

DEBUNKED
"Much like everything else of the day, you kept your personal life to yourself" stated my mother. "You didn't talk about doctors, or divorce, or anything like that it just wasn't kind or proper! At least
not in our circle!"
So there you have just a few fun new facts!

This weekends projects

Good morning from the lovely town of BeaverCleaverville!!
We gave had a very busy Father's Day weekend plus the MIC had the day off Monday so it was a long weekend. To say wrote Inge done would be an understatement!!
First up on Father's Day I took the MIC to Cracker Barrel where he spotted his treasure:
So naturally this 50s style car dice birdhouse just HAD to come home with is. We are going to place it in the back yard in hopes that another little vintage family will move in with us!!
Next up was the baby girls room. he MIC devised a way to place a rod across the room and VIOLA:
As her own vintage collection expands this will be helpful in keeping her clothes off the floor which in our hurried life is prone to happen!
Finally (squee) came my favorite two projects! First up he finally finally FINALLY hung my clothes drying line!! I am now hanging clothes out back like a real 50s housewife!!
Finally the MICE and I have needed a place for our razors and vintage MASH unit prescription box....so he made this by hand:
So that was our amazing weekend!! Hope yours was swell as well!!

Vintage Father's Day at the aquarium

Good afternoon from BeaverCleaverville!! Sorry I haven't been here but it's been a VERY busy Father's Day weekend. The MIC and I took the children (Zachary and CJ) to mystic aquarium and we had a whale of a day!
Naturally our vintage clothing on the entire family drew some attention! We even had to explain that we were NOT part of the titanic exhibit.

Up close and personal moments with the belugas, watching the penguins zip through the water, enjoying hearing my children's laughs, Hearing my son ask the MIC to pick him up and hold him. These are memories I'll never forget!

You shave with what...?

Good afternoon from BeaverCleaverville!
I thought I would dedicate a post today to one of mine and the MICs overwhelming "hobbies" as it were, and what spurned him to let me embrace more and more of our vintage lifestyle.
You see we are both wet shave enthusiasts. What earth does that mean? It means that we both use DE (Double Edge safety razors)
You ever wonder what those really thin, flat double sided razor blades were for? The picture above would be it. The safety razor was a modern marvel when it came out. Originally men were shaving with:
and if that doesn't conjure images of Sweeny Todd or Jack the Ripper nothing will!
Both types of razors require your lather to be created using a brush, bowl, and soap or cream.
the process can be difficult to learn at first but once master, lathering is something that becomes the "easy" part of the process lol.
I remember when the MIC first convinced me to make the switch I figured that a DE would be complicated and as injury prone as I am I simply stated "no I don't think so." But after much convincing and explanation I tried it and haven't looked back.
Yes the shave does take more time, and some effort to learn how to master, but once done you get a closer more comfortable shave that lasts much longer than any cartridge shave ever did. The other benefit is that it is SO MUCH CHEAPER!!!
Cartridge razor blades can run you almost 14.95 for four. I pay about 10 dollars for 100 and 100 will last me about a year!!!!!!
If you think that's something straights (straight razors) don't take any blades hehe!! But they take ALOT of skill and mastery to learn!!! Take it from someone that has taken a few nicks while learning one. (both the MIC and I both know how to use one!)
Unfortunately in this day and age this form of shaving has all but been lost, or so we thought. Fortunately there are several internet forums brining this art form back and bringing it back strong. The MIC and I are proud members of one and the people on it are very helpful in getting you started.
So if you are tired of the cost, irritation, razor bumps, and did I mention the cost? Why not give a DE a try?! Its the "new" vintage way of shaving!

Q&A

Good afternoon from BeaverCleaverville!
Many people ask me what on earth inspired me to make the flip to vintage, who inspires me now, who do I use as examples? So I thought I would do a Q&A here:

1) why dress vintage?
Why dress modern? Lol honestly I get this question a lot and the answer isn't a simple one. I could simply state "why not" but it's so much more than that. I enjoy the feeling of wearing the clothes. Yes the fashion of the 40s and 50s makes me HIGHLY over dressed in every situation but I always feel classy and it makes even the simplest moments feel extravagant (maybe those ladies of the day were on to something ey?) I enjoy wearing the dresses also because truth be told they make me look thinner! Lol they naturally give you an hour glass figure me who doesn't want that? Lastly when I go to a party I am almost guaranteed no one lose will gave the same dress as me! Lol

2) how did you get into the vintage hair and makeup? Is it that hard?
I get this question ALL the time!! During the Halloween season and for theater I am a special effects make up artist (my company white noise transformations is on Facebook). I adore the idea that make can be used to fully transform the face into anything you want yourself to be. I then stumbled upon a YouTube (YouTube is the Mecca of all video tutorials) user cherry dollface who specializes in vintage makeup and hair and I was hooked!! Is it hard? Like anything new it isn't easy, yes there are "cheats you can use but stick with it and now I could do victory rolls in my sleep!!

3) why the 40s and 50s?
Honestly this is a tougher question to answer. I looked at a lot of centuries. First off let's be honest, I don't think strolling into the local walmart dressed like scarlet Ohara and not get some really strange looks. Then I looked at the 20s and 30s and nothing really spoke to me.... Finally I just found the 40s and 50s and was sold! I love the fashion, the makeup, the hair...all of it!

4) is it hard to find clothes?
As I've approached in an earlier post it can be difficult but local thrift stores are my best friend!

5) what do strangers, your friends, or Family think of your fashion?
I find the senior generation really love my look while most just smile. My friends are sort of use to me and I think at this point the same goes for my family! Lol

6) you've mentioned having a record player, what records do you have?
The smothers brothers, victor Borge, the Beatles, les Paul & Mary ford , Andy Williams, Sarah Vaughan, guy Lombardo, Glenn miller, Jim nabors, and a few other classics!

7) who are your vintage influences?
Marilyn Monroe, Betty page, Lucille ball, Ditta Von Teese, Idda Van Munster

(Who apparently the MIC is convinced I look like)

Well I hope you have enjoyed getting to know me a bit better!

Being gluten free in a non gluten free household

Good evening from BeaverCleaverville!
As you have heard me mention in several posts, due to health issues I have recently taken on a gluten free diet. Let me tell you this is NO small task! When I started it first of all I NEVER expected my MIC or family to take the diet on so thus complicated cooking quite a bit. One of the hardest things when eating or cooking gluten free is cross contamination. The oil I use for one non gluten free item can NOT be used for my gluten free item. This also spans into restaurant ordering, which had become increasingly complicated (as my poor MIC) has found out. I can not simply go to McDonald's and order any longer and order anything I want. While a lot of restaurants are providing gluten free menus the truth of the matter us some simply haven't started yet, leaving me to use the almighty google to find out what I can order ( waitresses love that at the table or at the drive thru btw)
But while he Gould have moaned and groaned the MIC has taken it in stride. He attempts to try my different GF items to see what he would eat and switches to those to make my cooking easier. (Can't thank him enough) I've slowly learned that even the simplest items may not be GF ie. mayo or saracha sauce (bizarre right?) and slowly I'm getting the hang of living in a non GF world.
If any of you have suggestions or recipes please shoot them my way!!!

Baby vintage

Good afternoon from BeaverCleaverville! I know you all have asked if I put my daughter in vintage clothes as well! This has been a difficult task to say the least.
finding vintage clothes is a hard task because generally the mindset of he generation was different. In today's generation your baby wears heir outfit outfit once and they never wear it again. In the 50s your baby wore it, your friends baby wore it, their friends baby wore it and so on! They never the anything way and as such this has made finding clothes both expensive and difficult! But after months of searching I FINALLY found two pieces I am thrilled with:

Arent they precious?? Something you would swear Shirley temple would wear!!
one theotherfront take a good look ladies and gents:

This will be the last time you will see photos of me like this...updates soon!!

Homemade lemonade and my little "helper"

So here in BeaverCleaverville I tried to muster. I forced my way through half a sink full of dishes reached into the sink for lemonade and realized I had none. At this point my adorable baby girl CJ woke up and decided she needed breakfast, so I plopped her in her high chair with a Nutella waffle and went off to make some lemonade for us. I found a recipe so delicious I HAD to share with all you lovely people:

Ingredients
    For the Simple Syrup:
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • For the Strawberry Puree:
  • 1 pint fresh strawberries, hulled (or 2 cups frozen, thawed)
  • 1 cup cold water
  • For the Lemonade:
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 cup cold water
  • ice
  • lemon slices and sliced strawberries, optional
Instructions
  1. In a saucepan over high heat, mix together the water and the sugar. Cook until the sugar dissolves and it becomes a clear syrup. Remove from heat and set aside to cool while you do the next steps.
  2. Add the strawberries and the 1 cup cold water to a blender. Pulse until the mixture is pureed.
  3. To a half-gallon pitcher, add the lemon zest, lemon juice, 1 cup cold water, ice, and lemon and strawberry slices, if using. Stir in the strawberry puree and the simple syrup until well combined. Taste for sweetness and add more cold water if needed. Refrigerate to chill through or serve over ice.

She was so gosh darn proud of herself lol!
Well I'm off to find her under that mess!
